چکیده

This article studies the problem of estimating the self-similarity parameter of network traffic traces. A robust wavelet-based procedure is proposed for this estimation task of deriving estimates that are less sensitive to some commonly encountered non-stationary traffic conditions, such as sudden level shifts and breaks. Two main ingredients of the proposed procedure are: (i) the application of a robust regression technique for estimating the parameter from the wavelet coefficients of the traces, and (ii) the proposal of an automatic level shift removal algorithm for removing sudden jumps in the traces. Simulation experiments are conducted to compare the proposed estimator with existing wavelet-based estimators. The proposed estimator is also applied to real traces obtained from the Abilene Backbone Network and a university campus network. Both results from simulated experiments and real traces applications suggest that the proposed estimator is superior. ∗Corresponding address: Department of Statistics and Operations Research, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3260, USA. On the wavelet spectrum diagnostic for Hurst parameter estimation in the analysis of Internet traffic

The fluctuations of Internet traffic possess an intricate structure which cannot be simply explained by long–range dependence and self–similarity. In this work, we explore the use of the wavelet spectrum, whose slope is commonly used to estimate the Hurst parameter of long–range dependence. We show that much more than simple slope estimates are needed for detecting important traffic features. I...

Analysis of Ethernet Traffic Statistical Properties

Traffic profile, mainly its self-similarity properties, can have crucial impact on the network performance. In this regard, we evaluate traffic profile of Ethernet traffic. We have performed a measurement of the traffic on Ethernet network. Captured data has been analyzed from the protocol point of view, with the stress on the selfsimilarity, LRD and SRD properties. To evaluate these characteri...

ATM Traffic Prediction Methods using Wavelet Analysis

This work introduces the wavelet transform as an important element for ATM traffic prediction. Two methods are proposed. The first method proposes data fittings by the fGn model of parameter H, adequate for long dependence stationary processes. The estimated H is accomplished by a method based on Wavelet analysis. A small order Wiener filter is projected to implement the prediction and the fina...

Traffic Signal Prediction Using Elman Neural Network and Particle Swarm Optimization

Prediction of traffic is very crucial for its management. Because of human involvement in the generation of this phenomenon, traffic signal is normally accompanied by noise and high levels of non-stationarity. Therefore, traffic signal prediction as one of the important subjects of study has attracted researchers’ interests. In this study, a combinatorial approach is proposed for traffic signal...
